6 Simple Steps to Fix an Error: You may not have sufficient permission to create a portable company file from this computer

Step 1: Download and Install QuickBooks Tool Hub

  • Close QuickBooks Desktop
  • Download QuickBooks Tools Hub and go to your Downloads
  • Make a double click on QuickBooksToolHub.exe
  • Then follow on-screen instructions to install it
  • Now open QuickBooks Tool Hub from Desktop

Step 2: Run Quick Fix my Program

  • Once it’s open, go to Program Problem and click Quick Fix my Program
  • It may take some time to fix the issue
  • Once completed, restart QuickBooks Desktop
  • Try to make portable file again, if the same problem still happen, please follow the further steps

Step 3: Remove the special character(if any) from the company file name

  • Close QuickBooks Desktop
  • Now navigate to the company file location
  • Then make a right-click on the Company File
  • Choose Rename
  • Now remove the special character(@, #, $, !) from the company file name

Step 4: Ensure that Multi-User Mode is turned off on Workstations

You need to ensure that the server computer should be the only computer that hosts the company file.

  • Open QuickBooks Desktop on the workstation
  • Go to the File > Utilities
  • If you see an option Stop Hosting Multi-User Mode, click on it or if you see Host Multi-User Access… no need to take any action
  • Do the same on all the workstations.

Step 5: Repair QuickBooks Company File

Verify Data

  • Open QuickBooks Desktop
  • Go to File > Utilities
  • Choose Verify Data
  • Click OK to close all the QuickBooks windows
  • It will take a couple of minutes to verify data integrity.
  • If it doesn’t detect any problem with the data, no further actions required. In case, if it detects some problem with the company file click on Rebuild Now

Rebuild Data

  • Go to File > Utilities
  • Choose Rebuild Data
  • Click on OK to create the backup
  • Choose Local/Online Backup and click Next
  • Click on Browse to select the backup location
  • Then click OK
  • Click Use this Location
  • Click Save to back up the company file
  • Then it starts to rebuild the data file

Step 6: Verify Windows Folder Permissions

  • Close QuickBooks Desktop
  • Navigate to the folder where the company file is stored. Then make a right click on the folder
  • Click on Properties
  • Click on the Security tab
  • Choose the User among the Group or user names
  • Click on Edit to change the user permissions
  • Make a check on the Full Control
  • Then click Apply and OK
