Transferring Quicken From Windows to Mac With Simple Steps (Manually & Online)

Today we’re going to discuss “Transferring Quicken From Windows to Mac” including accounts, transactions, reports etc. that you’ll need to access with your Mac machine.

Quicken is available with two versions:
1.Windows
2. Mac

You can convert your data from Windows to Mac and vice versa easily. If you’re using Quicken 2016 or 2017 you need to purchase Quicken for Mac separately and if you’re already using Quicken 2018 or 2019 in Windows there is no need to purchase Quicken for Mac because, after the release of 2018 Quicken is available for both operating systems Windows and Mac in your Quicken account. You can log in to your Quicken account from www.quicken.com and download Quicken for Mac easily from there.

IMPORTANT: Quicken transfer process from Mac to Windows is not working properly right now.

We can transfer Quicken from Windows to Mac with two methods Manually and Online.

In the Manual method, we’ll discuss transferring Quicken from Windows to Mac using a flash drive or USB stick

In the Online method, we’ll discuss transferring Quicken from Windows to Mac using Dropbox or Google Drive.

Things to do before transferring Quicken from Windows to Mac

A. Ensure that your Quicken is up to date
1. Open Quicken
2. Go to Help > Check for Updates
3. If Quicken is already have the latest release that’s great or if it’s showing you to install the latest update click on Yes to launch it.

B. Create a backup for your data file
1. Open Quicken
2. Go to File > Backup and Restore > Back up Quicken File…
3. Now follow on-screen instructions.

C. Check your Categories, Payees etc
1. Go to Tools > Category List to edit any of your Quicken categories
2. Go to Tools > Memorized Payee List to edit any of your Quicken payees
3. Download any unaccepted transactions into your accounts register

D. Validate your Quicken data file
1. Open Quicken
2. Go to File > File Operations > Validate and Repair…
3. Choose Validate file and click OK
4. The validation process may or may not take that long depending on your data file size.
5. Once the validation process completed you can see DATA_LOG and check there are no errors.

Simple steps to transfer Quicken from Windows to Mac

A. Using a manual method for converting Quicken from Windows to Mac

1. Open Quicken
2. Go to File > Backup and Restore > Backup Quicken File…
3. On the next screen, you can check on Add date to the backup file name to make it different and click on Change…
4. Now choose your Flash drive or USB stick location and click on Save
5. Click on Back up Now.

B. Using an Online method for converting Quicken from Windows to Mac

In this method, we’re assuming that you already have Dropbox installed into your computer. You can download Dropbox from here.
1. Open Quicken
2. Go to File > Backup and Restore > Backup Quicken File…
3. On the next screen, you can check on Add date to the backup file name to make it different and click on Change…
4. Now choose your Dropbox or Google Drive location and click on Save
5. Click on Back up Now.

Now your backup is ready to transfer into Mac machine, you can eject your Flash drive or close your Dropbox in the computer.

Restore your backup from Flash drive or Dropbox in Mac Machine

Before you proceed further you need to install Quicken for Mac into your computer. You can log in to your Quicken account to download Quicken for Mac. After installing Quicken for Mac it’s time to restore the data file.

We are assuming that this is your very first time with Quicken for Mac

A. Restore backup using Manual method

1.Open Quicken
2. You need to Sign in with your Quicken ID and password and then click on Sign In option
3. On the next screen, it will show you several options choose Start from a Quicken for Windows file (See an image below) and click on Next

4. Next screen prompts you to convert Quicken for Windows file click on Select file to convert and now you need to choose your Flash drive location and then click on a data file and click on Open
5. Click on Next
6. Now Quicken will convert your data from Windows to Mac automatically and this could be a quite time-consuming process.
7. Once your data has been exported you are good to go with Quicken.

B. Restore backup using an Online method

We’re assuming Dropbox or Google drive is already been installed into your Mac

1.Open Quicken
2. You need to Sign in with your Quicken ID and password and then click on Sign In option
3. On the next screen, it will show you several options choose Start from a Quicken for Windows file(See an image below) and click on Next

5. Click on Next
6. Now Quicken will convert your data from Windows to Mac automatically and this could be a quite time-consuming process.
7. Once your data has been exported you are good to go with Quicken.

Things to do after transferring Quicken from Windows to Mac

1. Check your categories and payees

A. To check your categories
1.Open Quicken
2. Choose Windows > Categories
3. Click on a pencil icon to edit categories

B. To check payees
1. Go to Windows > Payees
2. Select your payee and click on Edit section to make changes that you want

2. Check your Accounts list
3. Close and reopen Quicken to ensure about the financial information is correct.
