Things to do before troubleshooting this error
A. Create a Company File Backup
- Open QuickBooks
- Go to File > Back Up Company > Create Local Backup
- Now follow onscreen instructions to create a company file backup
B. Update QuickBooks Desktop
- Close QuickBooks Desktop
- Press and hold down the Ctrl key from the keyboard. Make a double click on the QuickBooks Desktop icon. Don’t release the keys until QuickBooks is open on your computer. You’ll see No Company Open window
- Go to Help > Update QuickBooks Desktop…
- Click on the Update Now tab to the top
- Click Get Updates
- Once QuickBooks update successfully click on Close

6 Simple Steps to Fix QuickBooks Error 15240
Step 1: Run QuickBooks as an Administrator
- Close QuickBooks Desktop
- Now make a right-click on QuickBooks Desktop icon
- Then select Run as administrator
- If asks, click on Yes to allow user permissions.

Step 2: Verify Date & Time Settings
- Press Windows+R keys from the keyboard to open Run
- Type Control and click OK
- Then click on Clock and Region > Date and Time
- Click on Change date and time…
- Enable the changes and click OK
Step 3: Allow Windows permission to QuickBooks Folders
- Close QuickBooks
- Navigate to C:\Program Files (x86)
- Now look for Intuit folder and make a right-click on it
- Then select Properties
- Now choose the Security tab and select Advanced
- Ensure that the owner of the folder is the User group. If not, follow the below steps.
Take ownership of Intuit folder
- Click on Change next to Owner
- Enter User under the object name to select, and click Check Names
- Then click OK
- Now make a check on Replace owner on sub containers and objects
- Then click Apply and OK
- Now you’re back on the Intuit Properties, click on Edit
- Now select the User group and make a check on Full Control
- Then click on Apply and OK

Step 4: Verify Internet Explorer Settings
- Press Windows+R keys from the keyboard to open Run
- Type INETCPL.CPL and click OK
- Go to Advanced tab and under the security section, make sure to check SSL 3.0
Step 5: Verify your Firewall settings
If you’re using a third-party firewall in your computer for security reasons, make sure that the below files have full access to go through from firewall.
- qbw32.exe
- qbupdate.exe

Step 6: Reinstall QuickBooks Using Clean Install
Important: This tool doesn’t work with QuickBooks 2020. If you’re facing this error code in QuickBooks 2020. Please do a simple uninstall and reinstall of QuickBooks.
Uninstall QuickBooks
- Press Windows+R keys together to open a Run
- Type appwiz.cpl and click OK
- Under Programs and Features select QuickBooks and click Uninstall
- Click Yes, If prompts you
- Click Next and choose Remove
- Then Next and then Remove
- It may take some time to uninstall QuickBooks from your computer
- Once installation wizard successfully uninstalled QuickBooks, click Finish
Now you can run Clean Install Tool
- Download and Install QuickBooks Tools Hub
- Then make a double click on QuickBooks Tool hub icon on the desktop
- If asks, click on Yes
- Once QuickBooks Tool Hub is open click on Installation Issues
- Click on Clean Install Tool
- Then choose your QuickBooks Version and Product Version (see an image below)
- Then click Continue
